Why You Should Diversify Your Content

Take a moment and think about how Instagram has progressed over time. It started out as a photo-only sharing platform and has transformed into an online space that encompasses photo and video content, live content, sales, and more.

If you’ve been in the online space since the early days, it might be safe to say that you know what content “works” for you aka what content you like to create the most. I’m here to challenge what you’re comfortable with when it comes to content creation! Because the online space is ever-changing, so is the content.

It’s no longer enough to sit back, relax, and stick to what you’re comfortable with. It’s time to diversify your content. Here’s why, and here’s how to do it.

What Does Your Audience Enjoy?

The whole reason you’re out there on social media as a business owner (or it should be, anyway) is to serve your audience. You’ve got a solution to their problem and that is going to draw them to you. If you want to serve your audience, creating content that they like to consume is part of that! Just because you like static posts, reels, or carousel posts better doesn’t mean that your audience does. By only creating content that you like creating, you’re projecting your preferences onto your audience, and that’s a no no.

If you’re sitting behind your phone or computer screen saying “I don’t know what kind of content my audience best likes to consume,” ASK THEM! Not only will your audience love that you’re engaging with them, they’ll love to feel like their voice is being heard as a consumer. Throw up a quick poll on your stories and ask them what type of content they like to see best. They’ll enjoy your content more and your strategy will benefit from the increased engagement you’ll get if you’re creating what they enjoy.

Repurpose Your Content

Diversifying your content also affords you the opportunity to repurpose content and ideas across your social media platforms. That Tik Tok you spent a decent amount of time thinking up and creating? You can share it over to Instagram reels or take the thought behind it and create a static or carousel post on Instagram on the same topic! There’s nothing wrong with creating multiple pieces of content off of one idea- in fact, it’s encouraged!

This also allows your audience to consume your important message in whatever way suits their learning or engagement style best. If they don’t vibe with video content, finding the same lesson in a carousel post or Instagram story ensures that your message still reaches them.

Keep the Content Door Revolving

Diversifying your content not only refers to the type of content you’re creating but the topic of your content as well. You might like to post inspirational messages the most, but maybe your audience is looking for some more actionable tips rather than inspiration. Keep your content topics in rotation! You can share tips, guides, inspiration, etc.

By rotating your topics, this will ensure that your audience stays interested in your content and always has an opportunity to interact with it in a way that works for them.
